A reference to Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd in the Kellys directory of 1907 has the company at 26, Station Road, Aldershot.

My first reference to this company is 1898 Richard Diickeson & Co Wholesale Grocers, 7 High Street. They continue advertising right through to 1915, the address changes slightly from 7, to 10 and then finally 15, High Street, Aldershot. Embossed Front: Double embossed lines in a circular form containing within the circle C HAMMERTON & CO LONDON and in the centre of the circle the word STOCKWELL and the head of a horse facing left.

Embossed Back, Maker’s Name etc.: No other visible markings.

Remarks: 10 1/2 inches high. Screw Stopper.

Note :- I make no excuses by including this bottle, over the years all my digging mates got to know that I coveted the possibility of digging one of them. In fact they would shout out loud each time they dug one, making it worse. It does not have either Aldershot of Farnborough on the embossing. I personally dug many, many broken examples. I did finally dig one, much to my relief. Yes I know I should not include it, but the bottle had the Holy Grail type of effect on me. It is in my opinion a LOVELY CLASS BOTTLE.

Note :- The first reference I have for Hammerton and Co Aldershot is in 1878, I found a reference in Kellys directory as follows ;- Hammerton and Co Brewers and Wine and Spirit Merchants, Michael Hanrahan Brewers agent, 6, Wellington Street. They are still advertising in 1939, slightly different address number 9, Wellington Street.

Remarks: 10 inches high. Screw Stopper. The letter Q embossed on the underside of the base.

The first reference I have for Howards Stores is in 1899, Howards Stores (W Williams Manager) Grocer and Wine and Spirit Merchants, 1, Union Street, Aldershot. They are still adverting in 1939 and from the same address.
